Harvey is introduced to new philosopher by Mr. Smith. His name is Friedrich Nietzsche and he was one of the most influential German classical scholar of the 18th century. Mr. Smith told Harvey that Nietzsche was the youngest person as chair of Classical Philology at the University of Basel in Switzerland in 1869, at the age of 24. Harvey was so impressed and amazed. Mr. Smith continues to explain Friedrich Nietzsche's main philosophical concept which is based on two figures in ancient Greek mythology Apollo and Dionysus. Mr. Smith also said that Nietzsche found in classical Athenian tragedy an art form that transcended the pessimism found in the so-called wisdom of Silenus. The Greek spectators, by looking into the abyss of human suffering depicted by characters on stage, passionately and joyously affirmed life, finding it worth living. The main theme in The Birth of Tragedy is that the fusion of Dionysian and Apollonian Kunsttriebe ("artistic impulses") forms dramatic arts or tragedies. He argued that this fusion has not been achieved since the ancient Greek tragedians. Apollo represents harmony, progress, clarity, logic and the principle of individuation, whereas Dionysus represents disorder, intoxication, emotion, ecstasy and unity (hence the omission of the principle of individuation). Nietzsche used these two forces because, for him, the world of mind and order on one side, and passion and chaos on the other, formed principles that were fundamental to the Greek culture: the Apollonian a dreaming state, full of illusions; and Dionysian a state of intoxication, representing the liberations of instinct and dissolution of boundaries. In this mould, a man appears as the satyr.
Harvey felt so empowered and understood what Nietzsche meant; life is full of suffering and chaos and hard work and that's where we should find enjoyment and happiness by valuing what is most worth to us. 

Apollo vs. Dionysus

Harvey was a curious boy of sixteen, who loved to learn and dream. One fine day, his neighbor Mr. Smith, came with a book and a grin. 'Meet Friedrich Nietzsche,' said Mr. Smith with glee, 'A philosopher with ideas to set you free.' Harvey's eyes sparkled with delight, as he listened to Mr. Smith that night. 'Nietzsche was young, just like you,' Mr. Smith explained, 'He taught at Basel, and his fame soon gained.' Harvey was amazed by the stories he heard, his mind was racing, his thoughts stirred.

A New Adventure Begins

Mr. Smith continued with a tale of old, about two Greek gods, both brave and bold. 'Apollo and Dionysus, two forces at play, one brings order, the other makes chaos sway.' Harvey leaned in, eager to know more, about these gods from ancient lore. 'Apollo is harmony, logic, and light, while Dionysus dances in the night.' Harvey imagined the gods in his mind, each with their powers, each one of a kind.

The Tale of Two Gods

Mr. Smith talked of Silenus, wise and old, with tales of wisdom that were often told. 'Silenus spoke of life’s suffering and pain, yet Nietzsche found joy amidst the rain.' Harvey thought about what this could mean, how joy could be found in the unforeseen. 'The Greek plays showed suffering on stage,' Mr. Smith said, 'Yet they found life worthy at every age.' Harvey pondered this paradox of life, finding joy even in strife.

The Wisdom of Silenus

Harvey felt inspired by this blend, a dance of forces that never end.

The Birth of Tragedy

Harvey felt grateful for his furry friend, who made every day a joyful blend.

At the park, Harvey watched children play, their laughter filled the air that day. 'Just like the gods, they dance and sing, in their world, joy is the king.' Harvey realized that life’s simple pleasures, were treasures beyond all measures. 'In every moment, there’s a chance to see, the beauty in life’s great mystery.' Sparky chased a ball with delight, reminding Harvey of life’s endless light.

Harvey thought of Dionysus and his way, how chaos could bring joy to each day. 'In the mess, there’s magic to find,' Harvey mused, 'A dance of the heart and mind.' Harvey felt a peace deep inside, as he watched the world with eyes open wide.

Finding Joy in Chaos

Mr. Smith’s words echoed in his mind, a reminder that joy is always easy to find.

'Life’s a dance, a magical ride,' Harvey said, 'With joy and sorrow side by side.'

A Story to Share
