Maya was a young girl who lived in a small town in the Philippines. She had a hard time walking because of an illness she had when she was little. People in her town were not kind to her and made fun of her. Maya felt sad and lonely. Her grandmother, Nana Elena, loved Maya very much and gave her a special wooden figure of a woman named Maria Makiling.
