The Secret Road

Hisham furrowed his brow, a swirl of confusion dancing in his dark brown hair. “Mummy! Why can’t we have sugar? It looks so yummy!” he exclaimed, pointing at the brightly packaged candies on the shelf.

Mummy knelt beside him, her beautiful eyes sparkling as she smiled. “Let me show you something, Hisham,” she said. With that, she reached into her bag and pulled out a colorful drawing.

“See this?” Mummy said, unfurling the picture. It was a road! “This road represents our insides—where we keep all the important parts of our body.

Hisham peered closely at the drawing. At one end of the road, there was a big, smiling tummy, and at the other end, a grinning brain.

“Ah, those are little messages traveling from your tummy to your brain!” Mummy explained. “When we eat something, our tummy sends messages to our brain to tell it how we feel.

“But what happens with sugar?” asked Hisham, curiosity bubbling in his voice.

Mummy tapped the drawing, and Hisham noticed a bumpy part of the road filled with grumpy-looking cars. “When we eat sugar, this road becomes bumpy, and the cars get sad. It makes it hard for the tummy to talk to the brain.

Hisham gasped, imagining tiny cars frowning as they struggled along the rough terrain. “Why can’t they just go faster?” 

“Because when the road is bumpy, it takes longer for them to get to the brain.

 If that happens for too long, the tummy can get confused and even hurt, and that’s why we feel sick,” Mummy explained gently.

 “But look here,” she added, pointing to another part of the drawing where the road was smooth and the cars were zooming happily along. “When we eat healthy foods, the road is smooth! The tummy can tell the brain exactly how it feels.

Hisham’s eyes lit up. “So, if we eat good foods, we stay healthy and feel good!”

“Exactly! And we can enjoy our treats sometimes, but we should be careful about how much sugar we have. It’s all about finding a balance,” Mummy said, her smile warm and encouraging.

Just then, little Farah, Hisham’s 3-year-old sister, waddled over, holding a cookie. “Yum, cookie!” she squealed, crumbs falling from her mouth.

Hisham laughed and elbowed her playfully. “Farah, do you know about the road in our tummy?”

She looked puzzled, tilting her head. “Road?”

“Yes! Mummy just told me that pretty soon our tummy will be bumpy if we only eat cookies!” 

Farah giggled and held out the cookie.

“Let’s eat some fruits first and save a little cookie for later!” Hisham decided.

Hisham smiled, knowing that taking care of their tummies was as easy as choosing the right foods on their adventure through life.

 The road to health was indeed a smooth one, filled with happy cars zooming to the brain.
